You will be comfortably positioned on the table and fitted with a wrap-around harness. This restraint is what allows the unloading of the spine and discs by the traction motor.
Your position on the table, the harness, and angle of the gentle distraction allows for accurate and focused treatment to the affected disc or discs. Once comfortable on the DTS the computer controlled traction device is programmed to deliver a gentle stretching force to the spinal vertebra. This force is delivered directly to the harness system.
The Spinal Decompression system applies the gentle force then releases it for a determined amount of timeand repeats throughout the session. The total treatment time is usually less then 18 minutes and often just 10 minutes initially.
Most patients report simply feeling a subtle and gentle stretching at their lower back or around their hips. Since DTS therapy is a comfort-based procedure, patients usually report a sense of relief and relatxation during the session. Many patients even fall to sleep.
Your Initial Assessments include a physiotherapy assessment followed by an initial treatment program using the Triton DTS traction unit.
You will be with a registered physiotherapist for 30-45 minutes. Follow up treatments are one on one with your physiotherapist. Our physiotherapists will also address other issues as needed. This may include exercises, self mobilization techniques, education, manual therapy and core stability training using diagnostic ultrasound imaging.
Call today to book for an evaluation with one of our trained physiotherapists and see if spinal decompression therapy is right for you.
What is Spinal Decompression Therapy
Spinal decompression therapy is a non-surgical, comfortable traction therapy for the relief of back and leg pain or neck and arm pain. During this procedure, by cycling through distraction and relaxation phases and by proper positioning, a spinal disc can be isolated and placed under negative pressure, causing a vacuum effect within it.
We use the Triton DTS Traction System (DTS) which is considered the gold standard in regards to Decompression Therapy. Lumbar, Cervical and Wrist Decompression Therapy can be delivered utilizing the Triton DTS in a controlled and proven method.
The Triton DTS represents 25 years of experience in design combined with a revolutionary belting system designed for quick setup, comfort and effectiveness. The Triton DTS delivers exact force, continuously monitors progress and makes adjustments to poundage due to muscle guarding or patient relaxation.
With each decompression pull the friction free table overcomes gravitational forces, and returns to a neutral position through a recoil device. Flexibility is a priority, so the Triton DTS includes Cervical and Wrist Decompression attachments.
A High Volt Stimulator is included to improve local circulation to the target tissue and relax muscles. DTS includes an EMG Biofeedback device to monitor the muscles around the joints being decompressed.
If the muscles are in spasm the unit will automatically change the force of pull to help relax the muscles. This is all covered under physiotherapy. There are NO special charges for spinal decompression therapy.
How Long Does Treatment Last?
The therapy session takes about 20-30 minutes depending on the disorder that is treated. In general, 1 session per week over 3-5 weeks are necessary.
How Much Does this Cost?
Spinal Decompression Therapy is a modality used by physiotherapists, and is therefore covered under your physiotherapy benefits. Standard physiotherapy rates apply. Please contact us at one of our clinics for pricing.
Booking Your Assessment
Assessments will range from 45 -60 minutes in length, and include a detailed subjective history and a physical examination. If Spinal Decompression therapy is deemed appropriate a plan will be developed for your treatment sessions.
If your physician would like to refer you for Spinal Decompression therapy, you can print out a referral form and have your physician provide you with the referral. Alternatively, you can contact us directly at our Central location (519-439-6111) or North location (519-433-9111) to book an appointment.
