Overview

What is a Registered Dietitian?

The title Registered Dietitian, Professional Dietitian, and Dietitian are protected by law through provincial legislation. Only those qualified practitioners with the required educational qualifications and who have met national standards can use these titles. Contact our Dietitian Ayesha Sarathy for all the information you need!

What is the difference between a “Dietitian” and “Nutritionist”

Dietitians are members of a provincially regulated profession that has Public Protection as their mandate. Dietitians are held accountable for their conduct and the care they provide. In Ontario, Dietitians are regulated by the College of Dietitians of Ontario.

Registered Dietitians (RDs) in Ontario are uniquely trained food and nutrition experts. They are the recognized experts in translating scientific, medical and nutrition information into practical individualized therapeutic diets, healthy meal plans for people, and building the capacity of individuals and communities to access nutrition for health and wellbeing.

The term “Nutritionist” is not protected by law in all provinces so people with different levels of training and knowledge can all themselves a “Nutritionist”. The title “Nutritionist” is protected for dietitians in some provinces and dietitians do use the title “Nutritionists”. As the term “Nutritionist’ is not a protected title in some provinces, you should contact your provincial regulatory body to ensure that you are receiving services from a dietitian.

Why should I see a Registered Dietitian?

There are a variety of reasons you may benefit from consulting with a dietitian. Whether you are looking to improve your overall diet, manage a specific health condition, embark on a weight loss journey, or have your nutrition questions answered, a dietitian can work with you to design practical and realistic solutions for long-term success.

I can help you:

  • Lose unwanted weight and keep it off!
  • Reduce your risk for chronic diseases, such as diabetes
  • Learn to manage an existing health condition, such as diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, cancer, allergies, digestive problems, anemia, arthritis, etc
  • Optimize your nutrition before getting pregnant
  • Eat well for a healthy pregnancy and while breastfeeding
  • Manage a special diet, such as a vegetarian diet
  • Plan quick and healthy meals for you and your family
  • Eat healthier on a limited income

Do I need a referral to see a Registered Dietitian?

We do accept referrals from other health care professionals, however, you do not need a referral to begin receiving counselling services. Call or email to book an appointment with the dietitian.

Are Registered Dietitian services covered by OHIP?

At this time, private practice dietitian services are not covered by OHIP. However, your extended health insurance benefits or EAP may provide full or partial coverage. Please check with your insurance provider to see what coverage is available for dietitian services.

In Ontario, Registered Dietitians are classified as an “Authorized Medical Practitioner.” Even if your extended health insurance plan does not cover dietetic services, keep your receipt and provide it to your accountant to receive a non-refundable tax credit from the government.
